Learn about proposed changes to the Florida Constitution on Feb. 27

A funny thing about Florida is that we love to change our state Constitution. Instead of treating it as a document that defines how we govern, it’s often used as a means to enact legislation by allowing state residents to vote on an issue, instead of elected representatives passing laws through that traditional manner.
How much do we love it? In November 2018, Florida residents will vote on some 37 proposed amendments. And as you’d expect, sometimes the verbiage can be a little tricky, between the legalese and double negatives. (Sometimes you have to vote for something in order to end a prohibition against another thing.)
To help make sense of it all, the Constitution Revision Commission will hold a six-hour public hearing starting at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 to help make sense of it all. It’ll be in the University of West Florida Commons Conference Center.
